Atlanta Hawks iconEx-Hawk Childress signs with Greek club team - Atlanta Hawks

Former Atlanta Hawks swingman Josh Childress is leaving the NBA for Europe.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on its Web site that Childress, a restricted free agent, has signed a three-year contract with Olympiakos of Greece.
Yahoo.com reported on Monday that Childress, who averaged 11.8 points and 4.9 rebounds last season, had an offer on the table from Olympiakos for more than $20 million over three years. But Hawks general manager Rick Sund told the AJC on Monday that the four-year pro was just exploring his options.

The newspaper reported Monday the Hawks had a deal on the table worth nearly $36 million, with a first-year salary in excess of the mid-level exception of $5.6 million. While the Hawks could match any offer from another NBA team for Childress, they do not have the ability to match an offer from a European team.

Atlanta Hawks iconHawks Free Agent Smith Visits 76ers - Atlanta Hawks

Josh Smith wasted no time taking advantage of his restricted free-agent status, spending Wednesday visiting the Philadelphia 76ers - a franchise with plenty of cap room to make a big offer.

The 22-year-old Smith toured the city and visited the Wachovia Center with Sixers officials, who would like to woo the forward away from Atlanta with an offer sheet too expensive for the Hawks to match. As he's a restricted free agent, the Hawks can match any offer made to the 6-foot-9, 235 pound Smith.

"Everything is going good. He's enjoying his time here,'' said Smith's agent, Wallace Prowther. "They seem to like him. They seem to be genuine.''

The Sixers have about $11 million in salary cap space available and could use all of it to offer Smith a five-year contract. The Hawks have said they would match any contract offer to Smith, but are on the hook next season for big contracts for Mike Bibby and Joe Johnson, and they still want to resign forward Josh Childress.

Atlanta Hawks iconHawks Stun Celtics in Game 6 - Atlanta Hawks

May 3rd, 2008
This was supposed to be the biggest mismatch of the playoffs, the series that would surely be four and done. Well, look who's still alive in the opening round -- the Atlanta Hawks.

While all the other series are finished, Atlanta has improbably forced a Game 7 with the Boston Celtics, whose 66-win regular season suddenly looks a lot less impressive as they struggle to put away the sub-.500 Hawks.

Atlanta won for the third straight time on its home court, a 103-100 victory Friday night that sent the series back to Boston one more time for a decisive game Sunday.

Atlanta Hawks iconSmith, Johnson Deliver as Hawks Even Series - Atlanta Hawks

April 29th, 2008
Following Monday's Game 4 victory, Josh Smith deferred to Joe Johnson when asked about their epic fourth-quarter rally.

Even after scoring 12 points in Atlanta's 32-17 fourth-quarter blowout of Boston. You see, Johnson scored Atlanta's other 20 points.

That's right, they scored every point for the Hawks in the period; no other teammate even attempted a shot.

Atlanta Hawks iconSmith Leads Hawks Over Celtics - Atlanta Hawks

April 27th, 2008
Philips Arena's roof was barely stapled down the last time the Hawks hosted a playoff game.

Saturday night Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, Al Horford and the rest of the Hawks tried to make sure a raucous sellout crowd of 19,725 blew the roof off the joint. They did it with a rousing 102-93 Game 3 win over Boston, the Hawks finally drawing blood in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference playoff series that was hideously one-sided before now.

The Celtics lead the series 2-1 with Game 4 Monday at Philips Arena. The earliest the Celtics could win the series now is in Game 5 in Boston Wednesday.

Atlanta Hawks iconBibby, Hawks Rebound by Beating 76ers 92-85 - Atlanta Hawks

April 6th, 2008
Revenge was a dish best served by veteran Hawks point guard Mike Bibby on Saturday night.

Roughly 24 hours after suffering through one of his worst shooting nights of the season in a home loss to Philadelphia, Bibby helped the Hawks return the favor by draining two huge shots in the final minutes to lift the Hawks to a crucial 92-85 victory over the 76ers at Wachovia Center.
