Boston Celtics iconCeltics Coach Rivers calls Maggette - Boston Celtics

A day after talking with Celtics coach Doc Rivers, a longtime family friend, Clippers free agent forward Corey Maggette said he is seriously considering an offer to join the NBA champions.

Maggette said he is still in awe about being contacted by the Celtics and has been mulling over their contract offer as well as interest from several other teams.

An NBA source said the Celtics offered Magette the full midlevel exception, expected to be worth $5.8 million.

The Celtics have made offers to their own forward, James Posey, and Maggette, but it's doubtful they can accommodate both. While there is no news regarding Posey, Maggette said he could be coming to Boston in the near future to visit with the Celtics. Free agents can't sign until Wednesday.

"I don't want to hold the Celtics up or [general manager] Danny Ainge," said Maggette in a telephone interview. "I talked to Doc . . . I'm not going to hold them up. I know they are still looking at James Posey. But I'm still weighing my options."

Boston Celtics iconPierce's Defense Shut Down Bryant - Boston Celtics

June 13, 2008
With his team down 18 points, Paul Pierce had a message for his coach at halftime. "He said, 'I'm going to guard Kobe [Bryant],' " said Celtics coach Doc Rivers. " 'Let me guard him." Rivers obliged, and Pierce's defense helped the Celtics pull off one of the more remarkable comebacks in NBA playoff history, a 97-91 victory over the Lakers at Staples Center.

Bryant didn't pop off the stat sheet in the first half, but he had six assists before halftime, helping to orchestrate a Lakers offense the Celtics had no answer for. Los Angeles shot 50 percent in the half and got far too many open looks.

Enter Pierce. In the third quarter, Bryant finally connected for his first two field goals, but he had just one assist. By the end of the third, the Celtics had cut an 18-point deficit to 2, and Bryant had just 7 points on 2-of-11 shooting. He wound up 6 for 19.

Boston Celtics iconCeltics Stun Lakers With Biggest Comeback in Finals History - Boston Celtics

June 13, 2008
In their comeback season, the Celtics saved the biggest one of all for the NBA finals. Boston rallied from a 24-point deficit and beat the Los Angeles Lakers 97-91 on Thursday night to take a commanding 3-1 lead in this history-rich series and move within one victory of a 17th championship that seemed impossible a year ago.

A rivalry between the league's two most storied franchises -- with some of the game's biggest names and biggest moments -- now has its biggest rally. No team had ever overcome more than a 15-point deficit after the first quarter, and Elias Sports Bureau said it was the biggest comeback in the finals since 1971. One thing's for sure, it will forever be remembered in the annals of Celtics-Lakers lore.

When the final horn sounded, Paul Pierce, an L.A. kid playing in front of family and friends, doubled over in exhaustion and exuberance. The Celtics, the team he stuck with through 10 years, including a 24-win season in 2006-07, had done the impossible.

Boston Celtics iconPowe Delivers Early Knockout Punch to Lakers, Celtics Take 2-0 Lead - Boston Celtics

June 9, 2008
Phil Jackson mispronounced Leon Powe's name Sunday during his postgame press conference. The Lakers coach apparently didn't hear the fans chanting it properly a few minutes earlier.

Powe -- rhymes with toe, not "Pow," the way Jackson mistakenly said it -- was the surprising star of Game 2 of the NBA finals, coming off the bench to score 21 points in Boston's 108-102 victory over Los Angeles.

"We feel like we can go to the guy," Paul Pierce said. "He's proven throughout the course of the year once he posts up, get him the ball. And we've developed confidence that he can get the job done."

Boston Celtics iconCeltics Have Answer for Kobe - Boston Celtics

June 7, 2008
At what point does the Boston Celtics' success in defending Kobe Bryant become a concern? At what point does it go from being an oddity to becoming a trend? At what point does Bryant start having flashbacks to his last trip to the NBA Finals in 2004, when the Detroit Pistons' mix of long-armed Tayshaun Prince and energetic Richard Hamilton made life difficult for him?

Bryant hasn't reached that point yet. When he looks at what the Celtics have done against him through two regular season games and in Game 1 on Thursday, he has but one thought.

"Hopefully, it just means I'm due," said Bryant, who has been held to just 33 percent shooting (24-of-72) against Boston this season.
