Cleveland Cavaliers iconDefense Carries Cavs Past Celtics - Cleveland Cavaliers

May 13th, 2008
LeBron James is in the middle of one of his worst shooting slumps, but don't expect to get any sympathy from Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers.

"You think LeBron is struggling?" Rivers said. "You only look at field goal percentage. We don't. Clearly no one right now is shooting well from the field, but let's give him some credit. He's making plays."

Rivers' point was clearly taken on Monday night.

James nailed a key 3-pointer -- right after missing six straight shots -- and sealed the deal with an emphatic dunk to help propel the Cavs to an 88-77 victory over Boston at The Q in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

It started as it always does, with swords blazing like a bunch of musketeers bent on arson. As smoke puffed and fireballs flared, you wondered when the real LeBron James, the NBA's leading scorer this season, savior of the Cavaliers' franchise, King without a crown (although everyone figures that's just matter of time) would come out of the haze and funk into which his game had fallen.

Dwayne Jones is sure his old college roommate, Delonte West, had one of those moments following Thursday's blowout loss in Game 3 of Cavaliers' first-round playoffs series against the Washington Wizards.

Back at St. Joseph's University, the usually joyful West would return to the dorm, pop in the DVD of the previous loss and his only communication would involve himself and the TV screen.

"He takes losses worse than bad performances because ultimately he wants to win," said Jones, a reserve center. "He would watch those replays and talk out loud to himself and do these hand gestures on what he should have done. ... He would dwell so much on those losses."

When things start going bad and playoff pressure mounts, most teams get serious, talk about fighting for their postseason lives and approach the next game with fierce determination.

After dropping the first two games of their first-round series with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Washington Wizards got haircuts and shipped in a rapper.

When it did come time to play, however, the Wizards were plenty serious and it showed with a dominant 108-72 victory last night.

LeBron James had 30 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds, leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 116-86 victory and a commanding advantage after two games of their best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the Washington Wizards.

James shot 9-of-19 from the floor and finished just one rebound shy of a triple-double, sitting the final six minutes of the fourth quarter when the outcome was no longer in doubt. Zydrunas Ilgauskas went for 16 points and nine rebounds, as Cleveland shot 51.9 percent from the floor while stifling the Wizards into a 37.5 percent effort.
