Los Angeles Lakers iconLakers Take Series Lead 3-2 - Los Angeles Lakers

May 15th, 2008
The Lakers were helpless for a few days in Utah, bringing back two losses and a highly publicized case of back spasms before rediscovering themselves at home.

Kobe Bryant had 26 points and the Lakers secured a tightly wound 111-104 victory Wednesday over the Utah Jazz at Staples Center.

It was tense, it was close, but the Jazz never led. Indeed, a wire-to-wire victory in the most important Lakers game so far this season. The Lakers hold a 3-2 edge in the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal. Game 6 is Friday at Utah.

Whether Kobe Bryant, not yet 30, can rightly be considered old, this was a night to celebrate life experience.

Coach Phil Jackson prefaced Bryant’s pregame NBA MVP award ceremony Wednesday night at Staples Center — and the Lakers’ 120-110 victory to take a 2-0 second-round lead in this best-of-7 series that shifts to Utah on Friday — by recalling how he wished many years ago for Bryant to learn the virtues of individual greatness spawning team greatness but could not do it for him.

"It's Hollywood, it's a movie script. The perfect ending would be for us to hold a championship trophy at the end of it," Bryant said at a news conference attended by his teammates, club officials, his wife and two daughters.

"This is an award I couldn't have won on my own. I can't thank these guys (his teammates) enough. These are my guys, these are my brothers. Let's get ready for tomorrow."

May 5th, 2008
To reach the second round of the NBA playoffs is never-promised land, something the Lakers know well from the previous three seasons and Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom know better from careers with minimal postseason success. Gasol and Odom — picked third and fourth, respectively, in their draft classes — have therefore been stamped as unable to carry teams to real glory, tags Gasol and Odom can now put behind them while standing behind Kobe Bryant.

Los Angeles Lakers iconLakers Have No Problem Sweeping Nuggets - Los Angeles Lakers

April 29th, 2008
Big bristly brooms were everywhere in these NBA playoffs, giant kitchen cleaners such as Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett.

But Monday with the little ol' Lakers was the first time anybody has used the word sweep. Tough guys were everywhere this NBA spring, hammers such as David West and Carlos Boozer. But Monday with the nice 'n' easy Lakers was the first time anybody has used the word crush.
